gis based urban information system

The urban areas in the developing world are under constant pressure due to increasing demand of services. Cities/towns are now emerging as centers of domestic & international investments in an era of economic reforms, liberalization and globalization. This has created opportunities for technologists and planning professionals to guide and develop the process of planned development and management. With increase in the urban population of the country, city planning becomes an inevitable task. Cities are continuously changing and decisions have to be taken at each point, for facilitating its development and expansion.

The major function of the urban local bodies is the optimum utilization and management of the available resources for better planning and management of the facilities thus improving the quality of life in an urban area. More than 80% of the information used by the urban local bodies have some sort of spatial component to it, i.e. most of the Municipal information refers to a physical object (i.e. roads, sewers, water supply line and properties). So it is easy to imagine why managing Municipal information based on its geographic location can be useful. The easy storage, retrieval, analysis and integration of the spatial data with non spatial datasets shall address the needs of various local government departments such as Local Administration, Public Works & Engineering department, Public Health Department, Water supply, Town and Country planning Department, Public Safety, Land records, Tourism Department etc

The major objective of Gujarat Urban Information System (GUIS) is “Integration and creation of a comprehensive, multi-purpose common geo-spatial database for the urban areas of Gujarat and to develop a Decision Support System for Planning, Governance, Service delivery and Management of Resources.”
